Exhibition of Giuseppe Penone in Museum Voorlinden
Museum Voorlinden presents a major retrospective of Giuseppe Penone (1947) from October 9, 2022 to January 29, 2023.
For Giuseppe Penone, nature – and trees in particular – is both subject and material. In his sculptures, installations and drawings he uses tree trunks, leaves, marble and leather. In his poetic oeuvre he shows our close connection with nature and makes us aware of its creative and transforming cycle and powers. In Ripetere il bosco (1968), for example, Penone peels off the growth rings of a tree in order to reveal its origin. In this way, Penone unlocks growth processes that often remain invisible to the human eye.
Giuseppe Penone: "I feel the forest breathing, and hear the slow, inexorable growth of the wood. I match my breathing to that of the green world around me, I feel the flow of the tree around my hand placed against the trunk.’
