Presentation of Herring and White Bread
On October 3rd, it’s time for one of the most cherished traditions of Leidens Ontzet: the distribution of Herring and White Bread! The highlight of the celebration, a moment you simply can't miss.
You haven’t truly celebrated October 3rd unless you’ve picked up your herring and white bread.
De Waag opens at 7:30 AM, but the first eager participants start lining up as early as 5:00 AM. Braving the morning chill, they share stories from past distributions and place bets on how much herring will be handed out, and how many Geusjes will show up. It's become a true sport to be the first at De Waag.
Don’t forget to bring a bag or a small pan for your herring!
Want to join in? Sign up on Thursday, September 18th at De Waag. On this traditional third Thursday of September, registration for both the Herring & White Bread event and the Big Hutspot Meal takes place at De Waag.
