From canals to the seaside

The Region has many waterways and lakes and is bordered by the North Sea. For example, the Klinkenbergerplas lake in Oegstgeest offers great recreation!

Leiden has 28 kilometres of canals, and a branch of the Old Rhine flows right through the city and out to sea at Katwijk! Whether it’s a winter walk or sunbathing in the summer, a day at the beach in Katwijk or Wassenaar is always a pleasure!

There’s an enormous choice of cruises! Navigate the historic canals of Leiden, take the shuttle service from Leiden to Katwijk past the ancient frontier of the Roman Empire (the Limes), or discover the meadows of the Groene Hart region!

SUP-boarding is cool! You can go SUP-boarding in areas of natural beauty, on Leiden’s canals or along the coast in the North Sea: in the Region of Surprises, there’s something for everyone! You can also hire a canoe or a rowing boat and discover the many waterways in the surroundings.

In the mood for something speedier? In the sea at Katwijk and Wassenaar, young and old alike can learn to surf, canoe, sail catamaran and bodyboard and kitesurf!
