Zuid-Holland is one of the most water-abundant Dutch provinces, something you can’t miss in the Region of Surprises! There is a huge range of cruises to choose from, and you can also hire your own boat. Feel like an active day? You can go SUP-boarding, surfing, canoeing, rowing, kitesurfing and much, much more!

From canals to the seaside

The Region has many waterways and lakes and is bordered by the North Sea. For example, the Klinkenbergerplas lake in Oegstgeest offers great recreation!

Leiden has 28 kilometres of canals, and a branch of the Old Rhine flows right through the city and out to sea at Katwijk! Whether it’s a winter walk or sunbathing in the summer, a day at the beach in Katwijk or Wassenaar is always a pleasure!

Cruises or sail your own!

There’s an enormous choice of cruises! Navigate the historic canals of Leiden, take the shuttle service from Leiden to Katwijk past the ancient frontier of the Roman Empire (the Limes), or discover the meadows of the Groene Hart region!

Would you rather take the tiller yourself? Then rent a sloop or an electric motorboat! Tip: use the waterways map to plan your route through Leiden.

Active on the water

SUP-boarding is cool! You can go SUP-boarding in areas of natural beauty, on Leiden’s canals or along the coast in the North Sea: in the Region of Surprises, there’s something for everyone! You can also hire a canoe or a rowing boat and discover the many waterways in the surroundings.

In the mood for something speedier? In the sea at Katwijk and Wassenaar, young and old alike can learn to surf, canoe, sail catamaran and bodyboard and kitesurf!

Where there are so many waterways, there are also many marinas. Here is on overview of the marinas in the region:
