Exhibition Artists Villages: muse with Six Faces

From 21 September 2025, the Katwijks Museum presents Artist Villages: Six Faces, featuring historical and modern village scenes from six artist villages. Works by Van Goyen, Israëls, and Toorop are on display.
From Sunday, 21 September 2025, the Katwijks Museum will present a new exhibition, Artist Villages: Six Faces. This is a special exhibition, as it not only showcases paintings, gouaches, and drawings of Katwijk but also of five other artist villages around 1900. In addition to Katwijk, these are Domburg, Nunspeet, Volendam, Laren, and Bergen. The exhibition brings together works by renowned artists such as Van Goyen, Israëls, Artz, Kaemmerer, Wallat, Castle Keith, Gruppé, Toorop, and Sluiter.
For each village, similar scenes can be admired: village views, landscapes, interiors, and the residents with their daily work. Finally, as a contrast, there is a painting of each village as it looks today. This creates a kaleidoscopic image of six villages that share a history of large artist colonies but differ in appearance, residents’ clothing, later development, and whether the village is located on the coast.

EuroArt is the European federation of 45 artist villages in 13 countries, bringing an international audience to the new exhibition at the Katwijks Museum.
