Veenhof-lecture 2025

The annual Veenhof Lecture of the Netherlands Institute for the Near East (NINO) will be delivered by Dr Elena Devecchi, Associate Professor of Near Eastern History at the University of Turin.
In her lecture, "Of Fields, Granaries, and Power: Resource Management in Kassite Babylonia," she discusses the Kassite kingdom (c. 1595–1155 BCE) in Mesopotamia, where a dense network of villages, estates, and small settlements ensured the production of grain and other staple foods. Devecchi demonstrates how the Kassite kingdom managed its resources very effectively for over four hundred years, with the interplay between central administrative control and local, small-scale production playing a particularly important role.
