Loek van den Berg Quintet

The quintet of the young saxophonist and composer Loek van den Berg (1996) performed on stage for the first time in 2019.

Since then, they have played at festivals and venues throughout the Netherlands and have completed several international tours (including India, Spain, Malta, Germany, and Turkey). Their debut album, Wayfarer, in 2022, also gave their career a significant boost.
The title track was chosen as Best Composition at the Dutch Jazz Competition and the album received an Edison Jazz Award. This provided a good incentive to create a follow-up album. That album, Seafarer, was recorded with the same lineup. The music closely resembles that of Wayfarer, with an eclectic character that is strongly visual.

Over the years, the Quintet has developed its own recognizable playing style and sound, characterized by Loek's melodic compositions. Within the band, all members are equal: Each has their own style and sound, which comes through in the compositions, as there is ample room for individual interpretation and interaction. Loek gives his fellow musicians the freedom to explore the rough edges of improvisation. The narrative, layered, and melancholic compositions take us on a journey of imagination.
