The original Vlietmolen was built together with the foundation of the Vlietpolder in the years 1652-1654. However, the current Vlietmolen is not that old; the original mill was struck by lightning during a severe thunderstorm on May 30, 1913.

As a result, the Vlietmolen burned down completely and it was still unclear whether the mill would be replaced or not.

The mill was eventually replaced by a new Vlietmolen, but this too had to contend with adverse weather conditions. During a severe storm in 1956, the upper part of the mill suffered enormous damage. A demolition permit was requested to 'decapitate' the mill. However, the demolition permit was refused.

What was very special was that in 1951 Queen Wilhelmina chose the mill as the subject of one of her paintings and the mill appeared on the 2-cent children's stamp from 1951.

Visits are by appointment only or when the mill is in operation. The living quarters are private.
