A photo of the Zijlpoort in the evening

The Zijlpoort dates from 1667 and was built to a design by W. van der Helm. The Morspoort and the Zijlpoort are the only two remaining of the original eight gates.

The name refers to the river Zijl. Because the gate had to connect to both the city wall and the bridge, it has the shape of a parallelogram when viewed from above. The sculpture was created by Rombout Verhulst and contains symbols of power, war, and administrative authority. The gate housed, among other things, rhetoricians, a school for the poor, and the city's supplies.
