Before the Reformation this church was a stop for pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela. Afterwards the builing was used as one of the town''s textile halls, the serge hall. Serge was inspected and traded here.

Before the Reformation, this church was a stop for pilgrims travelling to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Later, the building was used as one of Leiden’s many textile halls. It was here that serge (a type of thick, woven fabric) was inspected and traded. A lot of the American Pilgrims found employment in serge production
