The Moppemolen was built in 1752 and, together with the Meerkreukmolen, drained the Veender and Lijker polders until 1924. When a motorized drainage system was installed on the site of the Meerkreukmolen, the Moppemolen became redundant and was retained as a backup pumping station.

The mill is considered one of the largest water-pumping mills in South Holland. This is due to the large diameter of the paddle wheel and the low head. Its location is also unique: the polder that the mill drains is located about 3 km away.

Visits are by appointment only or when the mill is in operation. The living quarters are private.
