The 'Kalkmolen' was built in 1684 to drain the Kalkpolder in Leiderdorp. But its original home has all but disappeared. The Kalkpolder is now covered with houses and bisected by the A4 highway, which has rendered the mill obsolete.

After searching for a new location, the Kalkmolen moved to the Doespolder in Hoogmade in 2009, where it has been keeping the polder dry alongside the Doesmolen ever since.

However, Hoogmade had one condition: the Catholic village did not want a Protestant mill within its borders. The upper part of the mill was therefore painted from dark green to red and received not only a new location but also a new look with a religious story.

Today, the Kalkmolen and the Doesmolen stand together guarding the Doespolder, a living testament to the fact that windmills remain an indispensable part of the Dutch landscape.
