The Orphanage
Visit the exhibition The Orphans Speak in one of Leiden’s largest monuments: The Orphanage. Open every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon, from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM. Free admission for children and adults.
The Orphanage – formerly known as the Holy Spirit or Poor Orphans and Children’s Home – is one of the largest monuments in Leiden. The exhibition The Orphans Speak offers a glimpse into the daily lives of the orphans who lived in the orphanage. From around 1583 until 1961, orphaned children stayed in the building on Hooglandse Kerkgracht, with as many as 579 children at its peak. Visitors can explore the living room of the house parents, the regentesses’ room, and the former children’s room. The exhibition features, among other things, a moving film with interviews of about ten former orphans and a 3D presentation of the building’s history.
The Orphans Speak exhibition is an initiative by Stichting Utopa. Stichting Utopa focuses on the developmental opportunities and creative talents of people.
