In a historic Dutch house on the Rapenburg in Leiden, Japan Museum SieboldHuis offers the finest from Japan: prints, lacquerwork, ceramics, fossils, herbaria, prepared animals, coins, clothing, old maps and hundreds of other treasures.

All objects were collected between 1823 and 1829 by the Bavarian physician Philipp Franz von Siebold. Besides collecting these Japanese treasures, Siebold employed artists to record animals, objects and customs on paper. In 1830, Siebold returned to the Netherlands and in the following decades, he was regarded as the pre-eminent European expert on Japan.

Siebold lived in the classical canal house of Japan Museum SieboldHuis from 1832 to 1845. He exhibited his impressive collection of Japanese curiosities here to the public. More than 150 years later, since 2005, Japanmuseum SieboldHuis is located in this building. In addition to the permanent collection, there are temporary exhibitions on a wide variety of subjects throughout the year. Japanmuseum SieboldHuis is a place where you can gain insight into the past and present of Japan.
