The 'Grosmolen' replaced a swing mill dating from 1640. This earlier mill was built in 1632 or possibly moved from another location in the polder, but was likely partially destroyed by a storm.

The Grosmolen drained the Grospolder, also known as the Voorofschepolder. This polder was established as early as 1570, making it older than the mill itself. Due to the steadily falling water level in the polder, the mill eventually became unable to operate effectively; it last did so in 1956.

A notable feature of the Grosmolen is that the upper shaft is relatively large for this type of mill.

Visits are by appointment only or when the mill is in operation.
