Lijkermolen 1
Contact
In 1779, Lijkermolen 1 and its neighbor Lijkermolen 2 were built with a clear purpose: to drain the lake and maintain the water level at the correct height. This is a task the mill is still capable of performing today, as Lijkermolen 1 serves as an auxiliary pumping station during extreme flooding.
What makes this windmill truly special is its shape. The Lijkermolen 1 is a 12-sided brick polder windmill, and that is no coincidence. The mason was convinced that twelve sides are stronger than a round windmill body. The result is unique; together with its neighbor, the Lijkermolen 1 is the only windmill of this type in the entire Netherlands.
The two windmills look alike, but there is one striking difference: Lijkermolen 2 was powered by electricity at one point, whereas Lijkermolen 1 never was. A windmill powered purely by wind, situated in the heart of the polder landscape of the region.
Visits are by appointment only or when the mill is in operation. The living quarters are private.
