The Intercity of the 17th Century

Imagine: no motorway, no train — just a barge pulled by a horse along a canal. That was the intercity of the 17th century! The network of tow canals made Leiden an important hub for trade. In 1657 the Haarlemmertrekvaart was built towards Amsterdam. At its peak, no fewer than 39 cities were reachable by tow barge.
