Art in the Region

In the Region of Surprises, you will find plenty of art! Learn more about Rembrandt van Rijn by visiting the Young Rembrandt Studio, or get your portrait sketched by Rembrandt at the Latin School. Learn about various aspects of Jan Wolkers' life during a walk on the Wolkers route. 

At the Katwijk Museum, you will discover the history of Katwijk as an artists' village, dating back to more than 150 years. Jan Steen painted some of his best-known paintings in Warmond. Let a guide tell you more during the Jan Steen walk and discover the Jan Steen House.

Enjoy the outdoors

Get out and about this spring! Enjoy a bike ride along the coast during the Dune & Sea Route, or discover the silver history of Voorschoten with the Silver Route Voorschoten.

The beautiful surroundings of the region are ideal to explore on foot! Take a stroll along the canals and bridges during the Singelpark Route. You can also take a walk in Rhijngeest park in Oegstgeest.  

Stroll through the beautiful nature reserve Hollandse Duinen National Park, with more than 60 km2 of greenery. Going out with your four-legged friend? There are off-leash areas in the Panbos in Katwijk!

Museums

The Region of Surprises has more than 28 museums to discover. Visit Museum De Lakenhal before June 16th to see 'Rembrandt's four senses'. In Japanmuseum SieboldHuis, you can learn everything about Netherlands and Japan in the 19th century during the fascinating exhibition 'Turbulent Times'

In Wassenaar you will find Museum Voorlinden, where the exhibition 'Sigh' by Sam Taylor-Johnson can be seen from March 16th or discover 'The Story of Voorschoten' when visiting Museum Voorschoten.

Food & Drinks

Enjoy global cuisine in Leiden! At PIPA Streetfoord Bar, you can eat the most delicious street food. Trattoria City Hall serves the tastiest pizzas and pastas. At Tabú you go on a culinary journey through Latin America! 

At the beach pavilions in Katwijk you can enjoy lunch or dinner with a view of the North Sea. Take a seat on the terrace at Brasserie Buitenhuis or stay nice and warm inside their greenhouse.

Monuments

The region is full of (hidden) treasures to discover. Visit the centuries-old castles of Duivenvoorde and Oud-Poelgeest and enjoy the beautiful surrounding nature. In Leiden, you will find more than 2800 monuments, ranging from hidden courtyards to churches and city gates.

Make an appointment to visit the second-oldest lighthouse in the Netherands, Lighthouse Vuurbaak in Katwijk. In the Torenmuseum in Valkenburg, you can discover both the history of Valkenburg and learn about  Roman Heritage.
