Farmers
This year Zoeterwoude celebrates its 750th anniversary. Once, sweeter water was found here than elsewhere in the region, making this area perfect as agricultural land to feed the city dwellers of Leiden. That farming tradition lives on to this day. In the polders of Zoeterwoude, Warmond and Wassenaar you will find cheese farms, ice cream farms and care farms that welcome you with open arms. Taste fresh Leiden cheese straight from the farmer, cuddle lambs in spring or spend the night in the middle of the polder. Real Holland, right around the corner.
Leiden Cheese, Straight from the Farmers
Leiden Cheese, Straight from the Farmer Description: Leiden cheese is one of the oldest cheese varieties in the Netherlands, recognisable by the cumin seeds throughout the cheese and its characteristic flattened shape. Cheese farms such as De Jong, Van Veen, Captein and De Sophiahoeve produce this artisan cheese from their own cows' milk. Come and taste, shop and learn how real farmhouse cheese is made. You can also cycle the Farmhouse Cheese Route through Zoeterwoude and visit the cheese farms along the way!
